New and Noteworthy: VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts Enters Beta – At AWS re:Invent 2019, VMware is announcing the VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts Beta program. We are begining the process for Beta nominations, so if you have an interest in expanding your AWS capabilities to your on-premises datacenter, definitely reach out to your solutions engineer ASAP. For those unfamiliar with the solution, VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts is a jointly engineered on-premises as-a-service offering, powered by VMware Cloud Foundation. It integrates our Software-Defined Data Center software that runs on next-generation, dedicated, elastic Amazon EC2 bare-metal infrastructure, delivered on-premises with optimized access to local and remote AWS cloud services.
New and Noteworthy: Google buys CloudSimple – Google recently announced that they have completed their acquisition of CloudSimple, the leading VMware MaaS (Metal-as-a-Service) provider in Azure and Google’s Cloud Platform. “We believe in a multi-cloud world and will continue to provide choice for our customers to use the best technology in their journey to the cloud,” Rich Sanzi, a vice president of engineering at Google, wrote in a blog post on Monday. This appears to cement Google’s belief in the demand for VMware’s Cloud Foundation platform in the public cloud, but it will be interesting to see how Microsoft responds to the move.

New and Noteworthy: Grant Shipley, OpenShift boss, leaves Red Hat for VMware – This is great news for VMware and for our cloud-native strategy over the next couple of years, lending further legitimacy to the work that we’ve been doing in this space. This is a view shared outside of our circle of evangelists here at VMware – the CRN article linked above published the following quote from an industry executive:
“Look, VMware is going all in on Kubernetes. They acquired Heptio. They’re investing tons of money on containers and transforming really quickly into the modern developer leader and hybrid cloud leader. There’s endless potential for combining VMware and Pivotal,” said the CEO, who did not wish to be identified. “So if you see someone like [Shipley] leaving Red Hat and their new home at IBM to take over Kubernetes at VMware – that speaks volumes to where this market is heading.”

VMware announces intent to buy Pivotal, Intrinsic, Veriflow
It’s been a busy week here on the acquisition front. The biggest splash has been the intent to acquire a company that was incubated here, in Pivotal. Adding CloudFoundry and the excellent team working for Pivotal will be a huge win for VMware. Additionally, we have announced the acquisition of Veriflow, an advanced network monitoring platform, and Intrinsic, which is a serverless computing startup. There is likely more to come on the acquisitions and where they fit into our portfolio next week at VMworld.
The latest update to HCX introduces three key features to help enterprise customers streamline the process of connecting, populating, and continually optimizing application placement in modern cloud infrastructures: Non-vSphere to vSphere migration (KVM and Hyper-V), large-scale bulk migration, and advanced DR with Site Recovery Manager integration.
